Midfielder: John Nielsen

John Nielsen
  • Born: 1974?
  • Previous clubs: Ikast (Denmark), now on loan (for the summer) with Leiftur team badge in Iceland

Nielsen started well with the Shrimpers and scored against Fulham in the 1996 / 97 Coca-Cola Cup as well as in the unforgettable 5-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

He is a hard working player and is good in attacking positions, always likely to score with a terrific shot. (He didn't do much of that last season though...)

On a personal note: I bumped into Nielsen (and Rammell) in the bar before the York City away game last season. Nielsen's a pleasant bloke and was a little miffed at the team's performance.

Nielsen was last seen playing for Leiftur who are doing well in Iceland's top division despite getting only five hundred supporters on a good day. He has managed an Intertoto Cup game (in which he scored) and claims to have created a few more goals for his new colleagues. He left Southend, by mutual consent, in September 1998.
