Mick Gooding

Mick Gooding
  • Player-coach from July 1998
Mick Gooding, the former Reading manager, was appointed player-coach during the close season. The 39-year old midfielder played for Rotherham, Chesterfield, Peterborough and Wolves before teaming up with Jimmy Quinn as joint manager at Elm Park. He said that he was excited at being offered the challenge at Roots Hall.

Mick has scored over 100 league and cup goals in his career (which spans twenty years, so far).

When the call came from Alvin I jumped at the chance...

I see my first job as working with the manager to produce a side which is capable of getting straight back up again after two desperately disappointing seasons.

Unfortunately, it seems that Gooding stopped Alvin signing a decent striker. Other rumours have suggested that Alvin and the board do not get on and that Gooding was brought in as a sort of manager-in-waiting. [Speaking personally, I hope that this is not the case.]

Rest assured, Tony Hall (of SUISC and WTSSG fame) assures us that Gooding is emphatically not looking for Alvin Martin's job.
