Striker: Neil Campbell

Neil Campbell
  • Date of birth: 26 Jan 1977 (Middlesbrough)
  • Height: 6'2"
  • Weight: 13.7 st
  • Previous playing career:
    • York City (21 Jun 1995 - 5 Sep 1997)
    • Scarborough (5 Sep 1997 - 21 Jan 1999)

Neil Campbell joined Southend for £12 500 in January 1999. He is described as powerfully built [and] has good pace. He is at his best when running at defenders.

While at Scarborough, Neil showed flashes of outstanding form, at one stage attracting the attention of scouts from West Ham United. However, Campbell was believed to be unsettled at Scarborough and Alvin Martin said that he had gone off the boil, believing that, with the right coaching, he could get the best out of the striker at Southend.

According to someone who has spoken to a friend of Neil's girlfriend Scarborough have been having trouble paying the player's wages (remember, Anton Johnson is their chairman). Colchester United had expressed an interest in him but the wages were not enough of a step up, we clearly offered him something better.

Campbell is now looking for somewhere to live. Neil's girlfriend's friend suggested Leigh-on-Sea but apparently the club issue guidelines on where would be appropriate and they must be outside the main areas because of the players' popularity!

Neil's younger brother, Andrew, is quite a good player on Middlesbrough's books.
