Forward: Jeroen Boere
The man who enjoyed such a love-hate relationship with Southend fans and players signed for Omiya Ardija in Japan at the end of the 1997 / 1998 season.
James Gang, on the SUFC mailing list, has reported that he contributed two goals in Omiya's 4-1 win over Sagan Tosu. He is now (May 1999) the top scorer in the J2 League (the Japanese second division) with nine goals in twelve games, helping the team to seventh position in the league.
Tragically, on May 21st Jeroen was stabbed outside a Tokyo bar and lost his left eye. The Daily Yomiuri reported:
Dutch striker Jeroen Boere... will stay at hospital for one month for treatment after being stabbed outside a bar in Tokyo and losing his left eye, club officials said Saturday. Jeroen, 31, was stabbed in his left eye and left forearm in the Roppongi district around 4.00am Friday and was taken to a Tokyo hospital where he had an operation to remove the ruptured eye. Police said Jeroen quarreled with two foreigners, who reportedly appeared to be of Middle East origin, at the bar he was visiting with his wife and friends. Omiya officials said the operation was successful, but were apprehensive about his future playing career. Jeroen, who joined Omiya last August from English Second Division club Southend United, is Omiya's top goal scorer...
The SUSC sent a goodwill message to Jeroen via Omiya Ardija's email address. Boere's response was to refer to us as
He died at his house in Spain, where he worked as an estate agent, on 16th August 2007.
