Midfielder: Mark Beard
Mark Beard was signed on 30th June 1998 after being released by Sheffield United. He is described as a
- Born: 8th October 1974
- Height: 5'10"
- Weight: 11 stone
- Previous clubs: Millwall, Sheffield United, Southend United (on loan, 97/98 season; signed 98/99 season)
- One England Under-21 cap
combative midfielder and, according to Alvin Martin, he forms part of a new quality squad of
strong characters and players who are desperate to do well, real winners.
Beard is a very committed player and that's what we need all over the pitch if we hope to regain our Second Division place at the first attempt.
We had Beard at Roots Hall on loan last season but he was never 100% fit through illness— I know our fans will see a different player when we kick-off in August.
An example of Beard's character could be seen when, although I told him he wouldn't be kept on, he still turned out for us at Brentford and showed the right attitude for the team.
I said then that I wouldn't hesitate to bring him back to Southend as soon as we had the flexibility to do so and when the opportunity arose I jumped at the chance of signing him.
The official Sheffield United website describes Beard as
one of the most cheerful faces in the dressing-room since arriving from Millwall... His bubbly character mirrors his busy attitude on the pitch and... he has provided valuable and consistent support as a squad member.
